What is Optometry
Optometry is a health care profession which deals with the examination, diagnosis of diseases and disorders of the visual system. It is a “Primary Eye Care Science” which covers the examination of Human Eye, Contact Lens, Orthoptics, Systems required for estimation of errors of refraction, the fitting, manufacturing and supply of optical aids.

Scope
The scope for optometry in India and abroad is great. The demand for qualified optometrists is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Industry estimates in India predict a requirement of over 2 lakh institutionally-qualified optometrists as opposed to the current availability of a meager 5,000. With new hospitals coming up and optical chains opening shops here, optometrists are much in demand. India annually needs at least 5,000 trained optometrists in rural, suburban and urban areas. But with only about 1,200 graduates passing out of optometry institutes every year, there is a severe shortage of trained hands. Add to that the fact that the optical industry is growing at about 20 per cent every year. As a result, there will be a boom in optometry in the years to come.
