What is Optometry?
Optometry is a health care profession that is autonomous and concerned especially with examining the eye for defects and faults of refraction, with prescribing correctional lenses, eye exercises and/or visual rehabilitation care for visually impaired, with diagnosing diseases of the eye, and with treating such diseases or referring them for treatment.
SCOPE
• The scope for optometry in India and abroad is great. The demand for qualified optometrists is expected to rise sharply in the coming years.
• Industry estimates in India predict a requirement of over 2 lakh institutionally-qualified optometrists as opposed to the current availability of a meager 5,000.
• With new hospitals coming up and optical chains opening shops here, optometrists are much in demand.
• India annually needs at least 5,000 trained optometrists in rural, suburban and urban areas. But with only about 1,200 graduates passing out of optometry institutes every year, there is a severe shortage of trained hands.
• Add to also that the fact that the optical industry is growing at about 20 per cent every year. As a result, there will be a boom in optometry in the years to come.
JOB OPPORTUNITY:
• Independent practice as an Optometrist
• Start own specialty clinic like Contact lenses, Vision Therapy, Low vision rehabilitation.
• Start an optical establishment/store for dispensing of visual aids.
• Start manufacturing unit to make Ophthalmic lenses/Spectacle lenses
• Job opportunities in Multinational Eye Care Companies.
• National and International job opportunities in Gulf, European and Western countries, etc.
